THE ALZHEIMER’S Society in Hambleton united with North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service for this year’s Dementia Action Week.

Firefighters took part in Dementia Friends training sessions recently, to learn how to support residents with the condition, while two fire engines at Richmond Fire Station were redecorated with the Alzheimer’s Society logo.

David Pitt, head of protection and prevention at North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said there had been a series of training sessions at fire stations and workplaces during Dementia Action Week last week.

Linda Haggie, operations manager with the Alzheimer’s Society said: “As first responders in the event of a fire or other emergency event where a person living with dementia could be involved it is essential that they have an understanding of the condition in order to best support the individual concerned.

“It is a huge step forward to be working with them on this project and being instrumental in their frontline and office-based teams becoming Dementia Friends.”

Almost 1,500 people have dementia in Hambleton and some 10,000 people with the condition are living in North Yorkshire.
