YOUNGSTERS jumped at the chance to be sports stars at a North-East race meeting.

Redcar Races celebrated its premier Racing UK Zetland Gold Cup meeting by staging a series of traditional children’s events, including a sack race, skipping race, egg and spoon race and running race.

Bob Champion, who famously recovered from cancer to win the Grand National on Aldaniti in 1981, presented rosettes to the winners.

Bob, who was brought up in Guisborough and won his first race at Redcar in a donkey derby as a boy, said: “It’s always lovely to come back to Redcar and to see families having such a great time.”

The Grand National legend also signed copies of his book “I’m Champion – call me Bob”.

Redcar general manager Amy Fair said: “This was one of the highlights of our Spring racing season and the crowds turned out in force for a cracking day’s racing and lots of family fun.”
