NEW 20mph speed limits are being introduced in Barnard Castle.

The measures are part of a scheme by Durham County Council to increase safety on the A67 between Bowes and the town, including the town centre.

Other measures include enhanced road markings and new signage.

John Reed, head of technical services at the council said: “We are planning to introduce a 20mph speed limit on the main shopping streets in the town and on the residential side streets as part of a project that will see wider road safety measures introduced on the A67 between Bowes and Barnard Castle.

“During October, we held a number of events where people were invited to see and comment on the project. These were well attended and generated feedback both at the events and via email. We have also placed notices on-site and within the local press to help keep the public informed.

“The extent of the 20mph areas has been based on speed surveys and will improve public safety and bring health benefits to the local community. There is clear evidence that lower traffic speeds reduce collisions and casualties lowering the risk of fatal or serious injury.

“This decision was made in line with our 20mph speed limit policy which adheres to the Department for Transport’s guidance on the setting of local speed limits.”
