A WOMAN who was airlifted to hospital after being hurt in a crash yesterday afternoon is said to be in a stable condition.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the two-vehicle collision in Bishop Auckland at around 3.35pm yesterday (May 24).

A black Volkswagen Golf car and a white people carrier had crashed on Etherley Lane, near the junction with Clarence Street.

The female occupant of the Golf was released from the car by firefighters from County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

She was then airlifted to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough by the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

A spokeswoman for Durham police said this morning that the woman had sustained a head injury but is described as being in a stable condition.

The male driver of the second vehicle, a Hyundai, received minor injuries and did not require medical attention.

Both vehicles sustained significant damage.

The road was blocked off for around three hours while the scene was cleared of the vehicles and debris.

Witnesses are asked to contact PC2177 Andy Wilson by calling Durham Police on 101 and asking for the Roads Policing Unit at Spennymoor.
