DURHAM Wildlife Trust has thanked the many people who donated bird feeders after thieves targeted one of its nature reserves.
Police were called to Low Barns Nature Reserve in Witton-le-Wear, near Bishop Auckland, on April 27, after more than 15 feeders were stolen.
Mark Dinning, head of conservation at the Trust, appealed for people to donate replacements, stressing the importance of the feeders following a harsh winter to ensure birds are in good condition for the breeding season.
He was overwhelmed by the response, with the Washington Wetlands Trust, Tesco in Bishop Auckland and members of the public answering the call by donating feeders, money and seeds.
Mr Dinning said: βIt really has restored our faith in human nature and we would like to thank everyone who donated.β
Anyone with information about the theft should contact Durham Police on 101.
