A FORMER teacher and long-serving councillor has been appointed as the new chairman of Durham County Council.
Bishop Auckland councillor John Lethbridge, who represents Woodhouse Close, is the new council chairman and mayor of Durham.
The former Sedgefield secondary teacher, who is married to Sandra and has two children and two grandchildren, has chosen the Royal British Legion as his chosen charity he will support during his year in office.
He will be assisted by vice chair cllr Katie Corrigan, 26, who is the authority’s youngest person to hold the post.
Cllr Lethbridge said: “I’m honoured to be elected to serve as chairman and represent the county council.
“I’m very much looking forward to spending the next 12 months meeting residents, promoting our wonderful county and raising money for my chosen charity.”
She has represented Belmont since first being elected to the council in 2013.
