A HISTORIC market is hoping old photographs will help spark memories at its first dementia cafe.

Durham Markets is holding the memory cafe today, as part of Dementia Action Week.

It has gathered old pictures of Durham, as well as past editions of the Northern Echo, to help prompt people’s memories.

Colin Wilkes, managing director of Durham Markets, said: “We’re aiming to provide a warm welcome to those living with dementia, their carers and families.

“We hope the Market Hall setting may bring back memories for some of our visitors, and are grateful for the support of many, including the Northern Echo, who have supplied us with old photos and newspaper pages showing photos of Durham in the past.”

It is being held with by Dementia Friends, an initiative by the Alzheimer’s Society, and takes place in Cafe Cenno, on the mezzanine level of the market hall, from 2pm-3.30pm.

It is designed to welcome those living with dementia and their carers, giving them the chance to chat about any issues.
