‘A TROUBLE shared is a trouble halved’ according to popular support group celebrating its 35th anniversary this month.

Bishop Auckland Stoma Care Group was founded by Sister Barbara Hodgson, a clinical nurse specialist, in 1983, and has been a lifeline for people with lower bowel problems in the area ever since.

Its regular meetings provide advice and information on the latest issues, products and medical practises, with guest speakers including doctors, representatives from stoma appliance providers and MPs.

Emotional support and friendship are equally important. Members are able to share experiences, discuss their concerns and enjoy confidence boosting days out and trips together.

On Thursday, the group got together for a celebratory lunch at Park Head Hotel near Bishop Auckland. Many former nurses and doctors who have treated the members over the years also attended the event.

Maureen Davison, who has been part of the group for 29 years, said: “It is lovely meeting up with people who truly understand. It boosts your self-esteem, which is so important.”

New members are always welcome. To find out more about the group and its work, contact Audrey Quinn on 01388-832148, Sandra Parrett on 01325-730192 or Mrs Davison on 01388-818267.
