AN Evening Star locomotive will go outdoor display at special event to launch a new models box set.

Visitors to Locomotion in Shildon will be able to see the class 66 No 66779 locomotive up close, including inside the driver’s cab, on Saturday, June 30 and Sunday, July 1. It is part of a launch event for Locomotionmodels.com’s new Evening Star models box set.

Locomotion’s Class 03 diesel shunter D2090 will also be on display outside, while inside the collection building visitors will find a modern image model railway on show, operated by Shildon Model Railway Club. People can also learn about cosmetic restoration projects in the museum workshop and, for a small charge, visitors can enjoy a ride behind Locomotion’s Class 08 diesel shunter 08911 Matey.

Bob Tiller, GB Railfreight’s engineering director, said: “We are thrilled that train enthusiasts and museum visitors alike will have an opportunity to get up close and personal with one of GB Railfreight’s most prized locomotives over the course of what looks set to be a fantastic weekend.

“Events like this are also a great opportunity to educate the younger generation about the railways, and possibly even encourage some to think about taking up a career in the sector, in years ahead.”

Anthony Coulls, the National Railway Museum’s senior curator of rail transport and technology, said: “The National Railway Museum is delighted to showcase the best of modern traction in both full size and miniature this weekend. The museum is as much about the present and future of the railways, and we hope the Class 66 will inspire as much as its steam ancestors did.”

The Evening Star models box set from Locomotionmodels.com features OO-gauge models of Class 66 No. 66779 Evening Star, and Class 9F No. 92220 Evening Star, the last steam locomotive to be built by British Railways.

Locomotion is open from 10am to 5pm daily. Parking and admission are free of charge.
