A DISTRESSED horse led to part of the A19 being closed off last night.

The animal was travelling in a horse box when it got stuck between partitions and became agitated.

Officers from the Cleveland and Durham Road Policing Unit announced the closure of one lane on the A19 northbound, near Billingham, at around 9pm on Thursday evening.

A vet was called and the fire brigade also rushed to the scene with cutting equipment in a bid to free the distressed horse.

The road was reopened around an hour later, with officers taking to social media to praise those who assisted with the operation.

They said that the rescued animal was “sore but fine” after its ordeal.
