A PLANNING appeal over the development of a 430-home estate in Newton Aycliffe has been dismissed.

Applicant Willmott Partnership Homes hoped to build the development on land to the east of Woodham Burn, and west of the A167.

A four-day planning inquiry was held at The Work Place, on Aycliffe Business Park, last month, and Inspector Hayden Baugh-Jones made the decision to dismiss the appeal on Thursday.

He stated the scheme would not be a “sustainable development”, adding: “The proposal would result in serious landscape harm that would adversely affect the area’s character and appearance.

“The proposal would not contribute to protecting and enhancing our natural environment.

“It would also have a very significant adverse effect on the function of the Green Wedge.”

In February, 2017, Durham County Council refused the proposal on similar grounds, despite the applicant stating it would be a “sustainable development” which would bring “significant economic, social and environmental benefits”.
