A BID to build an S-shaped eight-bedroom home, featuring a panic room, orangery and cinema in the shadow of the North York Moors National Park and a grade I listed property has been rejected.

A Hambleton District Council planning meeting heard the proposed 891sq m property in countryside near Kirby in Cleveland would also feature an equestrian centre, angular roofs and herringbone patterning.

Officers said the “detailed and thorough approach taken to the design has rarely been seen in the district”.

A report to the committee added buildings on the site were in such a state of disrepair they could not be used again.

Members were told as the site was outside development limits it needed to be considered architecturally outstanding or innovative, enhance its setting and be sensitive to the area’s characteristics.

Rejecting the proposal, councillors said while the scheme did appear to reflect the highest standards in architecture, features such as its shape would make it stand out in the area.
