A NORTH-East MP was among the 40,000 runners who completed the hottest London Marathon on record to raise money for charity.

Darlington MP Jenny Chapman took to the 26-mile course for Darlington MIND after one of her constituents raised concerns over access to mental health support.

Ms Chapman said: “I’ve been blown away by the work that is done down at Darlington MIND. Day after day they help and advice on the most complex and sensitive of issues - often with their services going under the radar of most people.

“I wanted to raise awareness of that superb work but also raise funds, which I know will go a long way. As I crossed the finish line just before 5pm on Sunday, after over 6 hours of running, I had raised almost £2,000.

“I cannot put into words what a difference that will make to those who use the services at Darlington MIND.

“Statistics show that one in four of us will suffer from some sort of mental health problem each year. At a time when our services are already stretched, it is imperative we support the tremendous work of those such as Darlington MIND.

“Running the marathon was one of the hardest things I have ever done. But, every wall I hit, every time I wanted to stop and take a break, the difference that my sponsorship money will make spurred me on.

“Thank you to all those who have donated so far. It means a lot. My fundraising page will be live for one more month, please give what you can - every penny makes a difference.”

Chief Executive of Darlington MIND, Gary Emerson said: “A huge thank you to Jenny for a fantastic effort at the London marathon.

"We are really proud and honoured that Jenny ran to raise awareness of our self-harm prevention project.

"The money raised will provide much needed additional counselling for children who have self-harmed in Darlington.”
