THE RMT rail union has confirmed another strike date affecting Northern rail services.

Its members will strike for 24 hours on Wednesday, May 9 in a dispute over the future role of guards.

RMT members protested outside Parliament to mark the two year anniversary of another long-running dispute on Southern rail.

General secretary Mick Cash said the aim of the demo was to draw attention to agreements in Wales and Scotland which have led to the retention of guards on trains.

He said: “If it’s good enough for Wales and Scotland to put rail safety first then it should be good enough for the rest of Britain.”

Mr Cash claimed the “dead hand” of the Government was interfering in its aims to achieve a negotiated settlement.

He said: “The RMT remains available for genuine and meaningful talks in each of these disputes.”

Northern has been able to run a partial timetable during previous walk-outs with buses replacing some trains.
