A MILITARY parade will be taking place in the North-East on Saturday.

Soldiers from the 5th Battalion Royal Regiment of Fusiliers (5RRF), based in Newcastle, will march from Newcastle Civic Centre to the Cathedral of St Nicholas to mark the closest Saturday to St George’s Day.

Fusiliers will be joined by reservists, veterans and cadets for a 700-strong parade through the city and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the formation of the regiment.

St George’s Day is the annual day of the regiment, whose recruits sport red and white feathered hackles in their beret.

Newcastle City Council chief executive Pat Ritchie said: “Newcastle has a long association with the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers and the council is proud to be able to join in with the Fusilier 50 celebrations as part of this historic occasion to commemorate this landmark year.

“The parade will be spectacular and a great opportunity for everyone in our city pay tribute to those who serve our city and country so well.”

The Colonel of the Regiment Major General Paul Nanson CBE and the Lord Mayor of Newcastle Councillor Linda Wright will inspect the parade at 9.30am and there will be a cathedral service at 11am afterwards.
