PEOPLE are being invited to have a look behind the scenes at a popular steam railway.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is set to throw open its doors and invite people to learn about the inner workings of a heritage railway during the first May Bank Holiday, from May 5 to May 7.

At Pickering, visitors will be able to see what goes on inside the carriage and wagon workshop.

The archive and education departments will also be producing a display on the historic bridges along the line, with original pen and ink plans displayed in a draughtsman’s drawing office.

Levisham Station visitors will be treated to signal box tours and at Goathland there will be a talk on the history of the station.

There will also be information about the vital repair works needed to the bridges located on the approach to the station, as well as plans to install a new education carriage.

Meanwhile in Grosmont, the operating hub of the railway, there will be the chance to walk through the repair shop and running shed to get a first-hand insight into the work being carried out on locomotives and rolling stock.

North East Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) and the NYMR’s junior volunteers will also be on hand to provide further details about the Yorkshire’s Magnificent Journey appeal, as well offering a selection of cakes and hot beverages for sale.
