SOME of the Commonwealth’s best young fencers are heading to the region later this year.

More than 600 young athletes from across the globe will be competing in Newcastle at the junior Commonwealth Fencing Championships in July.

Event coordinator Beth Davidson, a former Commonwealth gold medalist who currently trains in Durham, is trying to recruit both fencers and non-fencers to volunteer at the event.

She said: “This is a great opportunity for the North-East region to see some of the best fencers from all over the world compete in this major event.

“Visitors will have a chance to see and try fencing in and around the venue, getting close to all the action.”

She added: “England currently has Commonwealth champions in all age groups so there is high expectation for the home country.”

The event takes place at Sport Central, at Northumbria University from July 23-30.

It takes place every three years and last happened in Cape Town in South Africa in 2015.

Tickets go on sale in July and anyone interested in volunteering at the event should visit www.fencingnortheast.org.
