A MOTORCYCLIST has suffered serious leg injuries in a crash involving a classic sports car on Saturday afternoon.

The collision involved a Kawasaki motorbike and a Caterham convertible sports car, and occurred on the B6278 between Stanhope Ford and the Bollihope junction in Weardale.

Durham Police and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident shortly after 4.15pm, along with a team from the Great North Air Ambulance Service, who airlifted the motorcyclist to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The Caterham driver was uninjured.

The road was closed for two hours while emergency services cleared the scene.

On Facebook, Durham Police posted: "Police are investigating a road traffic collision where a motorcyclist received serious injuries in a collision on the B6278 around two miles south of Stanhope on the afternoon of Saturday, April 14, 2018. The motorcyclist, travelling north lost control and collided with a car heading in the opposite direction."
