NETWORK Rail is urging passengers travelling between the North-East and Manchester to check before they travel as work takes place to the railway.

The work will take place on Saturday and Sunday and due to the nature of the work, there will be significant changes to train services from Newcastle, Durham and Darlington to Manchester and vice versa.

Work includes extending platforms at Marsden and Slaithwaite stations to cater for longer trains, as well as work to Standedge aqueduct. There is also work to track and signalling taking place between Stalybridge and Manchester Victoria.

Passengers are urged to check before they travel via National Rail Enquiries and to allow extra time.
