A FAMILY fun day is being held to raise money to help a 12-year-old travel to Germany for surgery to correct a curve in her spine.

Lauren Rennie, from Ushaw Moor, is due to travel to Germany next month for the operation, which is currently not available in the UK. The 12-year-old has had scoliosis since she was a baby and has three curves in her back, including one of 55 degrees. Her family is trying to raise £32,000 to travel to the hospital.

The Bent not Broken fundraiser takes place at Bearpark and District Workmens Club, in Field View, on Saturday, April 14, between 2pm and 6pm and will include a fairground, zumbathon, refreshments and stalls.

Previous fundraisers, including a sponsored silence at Durham Johnston School, where Lauren is a pupil, have raised more than £16,000.

Joanne Rennie, Lauren’s mum, said: “We would like to say we are eternally grateful for the support everyone has given Lauren so far. We are absolutely overwhelmed.”
