A HOOLIGAN stamped on the back of a police officer during a violent confrontation at a railway station in which batons were used and Tasers drawn.

Samuel Paul Johnson, 26, was returning from the Middlesbrough versus Leeds United fixture at the Riverside on March 2 when he was asked to leave a late night service to York because of his abusive behaviour.

Johnson and a group of men, described as “high on drink and drugs”, then left and squared up to another group on the platform at Middlesbrough station.

When officers from British Transport Police tried to intervene, Johnson’s group then attacked them.

While one man was being restrained on the ground by officers, Johnson ran across and using his full force stamped on one of the officer’s backs.

Fortunately the officer did not sustain any serious injury and he chased after Johnson who was eventually arrested.

The defendant, of Allenby Crescent, Leeds pleaded guilty to assaulting an officer and possession of cocaine and was fined £1,254 by Newton Aycliffe magistrates.

Sergeant Bob Smith, of British Transport Police, said: “The group, who were high on drugs and drink, were intent on a fight and after initially targeting other passengers they then turned on officers.

“The behaviour of Johnson and the group he was with was absolutely disgraceful and must have been extremely frightening for other fans, passengers and staff on the train and at the station.”
