ONE of a town's main roads is to be closed for up to five days in preparation for the arrival of the Tour de Yorkshire.

Bridge Street in Bedale, which runs through the centre of the town, is set to be closed from Monday, March 19, while work is carried out on the surface which has been badly damaged in recent years.

It is understood the work is needed to smooth the way for the Tour de Yorkshire cyclists who will be racing through the town on Saturday, May 5, when they are expected to arrive between noon and 1pm.

It is the first time the big bike race has come through Bedale and elaborate preparations are being made for the much-heralded event.

They include setting up a big screen, various entertainments and refreshments alongside a bumper car boot sale in Bedale Hall park which is being staged as part of the celebrations.

Resurfacing work was originally due to be carried out over a week ago but driving snow and ice meant the work had to be cancelled.

Now town leaders are hoping the work can finally go ahead, but want to warn as many drivers as possible that the road will be closed.

Diversions for motorists are being set up along the new Bedale bypass, although traffic could also be using Emgate, the alternative road from the town centre - however weight restrictions will apply.
