A TOWN centre is being vandalised with obscene graffiti including depictions of male genitalia and swastikas.

Peterlee, in East Durham, has faced similar problems in the past when the Apollo Pavilion art instalment became a popular target of crime.

The art piece was subject to graffiti and vandalism but has since been refurbished.

Reports of drug use, graffiti and street drinking are being tackled in the town.

A spokesman, from Durham Constabulary said: “We are aware of ongoing anti-social behaviour within the Peterlee town centre area and continue to work closely with partner agencies and the community to resolve this.

“Officers are carrying out actions under Operation Relentless which targets perpetrators of anti-social behaviour to ensure residents within the communities feel safe.

“We would encourage the public to provide intelligence using Crimestoppers.”

A spokesperson for Peterlee Town Council said: “The council are keen to tackle issues of graffiti and littering around the town.

“Although we don't own any of the buildings in the town centre area we do have a good working relationship with the Town Centre management company and with Durham County Council.

“If any residents have any specific concerns regarding graffiti they are very welcome to forward details to council@peterlee.gov.uk and we will be happy to take the matter up on their behalf. Alternatively local residents can report graffiti to Durham County Council direct on 03000 26 0000 or via the Council's 'do it online' website."
