FRIENDS and family today paid their final farewells to a student who died outside a Durham nightclub.

Olivia Burt suffered fatal head injuries during a crowd surge as people queued to get into the Missoula nightclub, in the city’s Walkergate complex shortly before midnight on February 7. A Service of Thanksgiving for the Durham University student was held at All Saints’ Church, Milford-on-Sea.

The Master of University College, Professor David Held said: “Her tragic death was terrible shock for all of us.

“Olivia had an outstanding academic record and was an exceptional sports woman. She quickly became active both in college life and the wider university.

“But, more than that, she was a wonderful individual and friend to many. The university and college has continued to pay tribute to her in a number of ways, including flying the college flag at half-mast on Durham Castle and holding a candlelit vigil.

“It was fitting that I, our college chaplain and a number of Olivia’s friends attended her funeral.

"We are continuing to offer support to students and staff affected by her death.”
