PEOPLE with dementia and their carers can get support and respite at a new memory cafe set up to reduce loneliness and social isolation.
The memory café at Harrison Close community lounge, in Shildon, was launched to provide a safe environment for those affected by dementia to seek help and enjoy social activities.
It is the second memory cafe to open in the town– one launched at Chestnut Close last year has already attracted more than 240 visitors.
The partnership behind the café includes Livin, Shildon Health Express, Durham County Council, the Pioneering Care Partnership, Shildon Town Council, Shildon Alive and the Alzheimer’s Society.
Brian Stephens, of Shildon Health Express, said: “There is increasing demand for services to support people living with Alzheimer’s.
“We are delighted to be leading the way on such a worthwhile initiative and this is another positive step towards creating a dementia friendly community in Shildon.
“Working with Livin and using the accommodation and facilities they have provided at Harrison Close, and with the help and guidance of the Alzheimer’s Society we can offer real support to those who need it most.”
The café holds free drop-in sessions with advisors from the Alzheimer’s Society and volunteer-led activities such as singing and dance on the third Tuesday of every month, from1pm to 2.30pm.
