TRANSPORT Secretary Chris Grayling says a £3bn programme of improvements to the TransPennine rail route will begin in the spring of next year.
Mr Grayling was criticised last year for not going ahead with plans to electrify the route, while at the same time giving the green light to the Crossrail 2 project in London.
That is now to be the subject of a review to ensure that it demonstrates value for money for the taxpayer.
Speaking at the Transport for the Northern Powerhouse conference in Leeds, Mr Grayling confirmed Network Rail would begin investing £3bn into an ambitious programme of works as soon as possible.
The work is aimed at improving journey times, capacity and reliability on the TransPennine route, which links Liverpool and Manchester with Yorkshire and the North-East.
