COUNCILLORS overwhelmed by the “brilliant job” volunteer litter pickers are doing bought them equipment to help.

Bedale Litter Busters was set up by volunteer Claire Gerrard, who moved to the town three-years-ago and decided it was such a nice place it deserved to be kept tidy.

A year ago she made a new year’s resolution to go out litter picking and throughout 2017 was regularly seen gathering rubbish, with others gradually joining in.

At the end of last year they set up Bedale Litter Busters and the 14-strong group now have a regular monthly pick up as well as individual trips.

Bedale town council was so impressed they donated 12 kits, worth around £300 to the group, with high vis jackets, gloves, pickers and bag holders.

Mayor Christine Mollard said: “They are absolutely brilliant, their dedication to go out in all weathers and pick up litter is amazing that is why we wanted to support them by giving them the tools to do the job.”

The next litter pick is on March 4, meet at Bedale bus stop at 8am.
