MORE than 80 drivers have been stopped as part of a police operation targeting vehicles carrying dangerous goods.

As part of four days of action carried out last week, 82 vehicles were assessed for faulty brake lights, under-inflated wheels, document offences and not having the right signs for substances, by Cleveland and Durham Constabulary.

Vehicles with faulty or no tacographs – devices which record speeds – were also checked.

Of the drivers stopped and spoken to, four prohibitions were issued and two verbal warnings given for defective or missing safety equipment and incorrect paperwork and two drivers were found to be committing operator licence offences.

The operation was run jointly with Driving and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) for tachograph-related offences.
