A PETITION against the closure of the school in a village has been handed to Parliament.

More than 650 people signed the petition against the closure of the school site in Sherburn Village, which was presented to Parliament by Durham MP Roberta Blackman-Woods.

Durham County Council is holding a public consultation on plans to close the school site, which is part of Sherburn Primary School, and have all children taught in nearby Sherburn village.

It says it will be more viable than running the school over two sites and will provide a better education for the 45 children currently taught in Sherburn Hill.

A community action group as been formed to fight the proposal.

Another public meeting with the MP is due to be held at the chapel in Sherburn Hill, at 6pm on Wednesday.
