THE stars of a North-East fire and rescue service were honoured at an inaugural awards ceremony tonight (Friday).

The first “Being The Best Awards” were staged at Hardwick Hall Hotel, near Sedgefield, to recognise the dedication of staff working for County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

The climax of the evening saw retiring Deputy Chief Fire Officer Colin Bage presented with a special award to recognise his 30 years of outstanding service.

Councillor John Robinson, chair of the county's fire authority, described Colin as “a truly special person who has been a credit to the service and will be hugely missed”.

Chief Fire Officer Stuart Errington said: “These awards have made me very proud to know that we have such special people always striving to be the best.”

The evening was compered by former editor of The Northern Echo, Peter Barron, and the winners were:

• Outstanding Contribution: Mick Corfield, White Watch crew manager, based at Peterlee, for setting up the Young Firefighters’ Association.

• Best Frontliner: Warren Metcalfe “for his innovation, professionalism and outstanding charity work”.

• Best Leader: Rob Cherrie, District Manager at Derwentside, described as “inspirational, motivating and enthusiastic”.

• Best Support: Sharon Lewin, Communications and Governance Co-ordinator, who created the “Women In The Fire Service” group.

• Best Innovator: Mark Henderson, Vulnerable Persons Advocate, whose work led to significant change in dementia support in the community and for service personnel.

• Best Newcomer: Claire Hodkinson, for making such a huge impact so soon into her career with the service.
