CLEAN: Emissions will be restricted as part of new clean air zone in York
NEW emission rules are being brought in with a Clean Air Zone across York.
Buses will be subject to new emission rules and drivers face fines if they leave engines running on stationary vehicles.
The city council is bringing in the new rules as part of a push to cut down on harmful pollution and improve air quality across the city. Figures show while air quality in general has improved since 2010, in some areas measurements of harmful nitrogen dioxide “persistently exceed” accepted levels. The increase can largely be put down to diesel engines, including ageing diesel buses. By 2020 most buses will now have to meet emission standards, but campaigners say the rules should be extended to goods vehicles.
