A MAN has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with the murder of Michael Price.

Paul Ronald Watson, of The Crescent, Chester-le-Street, appeared before magistrates in Newton Aycliffe this morning.

Wearing a black jumper with a white Nike tick logo, the 30-year-old spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth from the dock.

He is charged with the murder of Michael Price, 36, who died on Wednesday, January 24.

Mr Price suffered critical head injuries after he was attacked in the Victor Street area of Chester-le-Street in the early hours of Saturday, January 13.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle for treatment, but later died from his injuries.

Newton Aycliffe Magistrates' Court was told the case could only be heard at the crown court.

The defendant, who was represented by Jaxon Taylor and whose two family members sat in court, made no plea.

The case was committed to Newcastle Crown Court where he is due to appear on Monday.

Chairman of the bench Stuart Little said: "We've heard what has been said.

"Due to the nature of this case it can not be heard in this court, it will be in the crown court, and that will be Newcastle Crown Court, and you will be remanded in custody until that day."

Police last night said two women aged 35 and 36 who were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent following the incident have been rearrested on suspicion of murder.

They have both been released under investigation.
