I WAS no supporter of Margaret Thatcher, particularly her privatisation policies. Nevertheless, I do support the erection of a bronze statue to her in Parliament Square.

It wouldn’t be so bad if opponents of the statue based their objections on grounds of policy, like the poll tax, or the way she dealt with the miners. But, instead, they argue weakly that the statue will be vandalised; that Maggie should be holding a handbag; that the statue should be of iron; that there are already too many statues in the Square.

These petty arguments are totally outweighed by the fact that Margaret Thatcher was our first female PM and, longest serving PM of the 20th century.

Love her or loathe her, Margaret Thatcher had the courage of her convictions. O that Maggie were here today to deliver a successful Brexit!
