TRIBUTES have flooded in for a public service worker who spent four decades helping people across the region.

Colin Morris, who had 40 years public service experience across a range of social services in Darlington and with the NHS, passed away earlier this week aged 61.

Away from the town, he led a team to Romania investigating the international adoption of children in orphanages, and in 1999, on behalf of UNICEF and the Mauritius Government, he undertook an inquiry into child abuse in the country.

Ken Jarrold, who appointed Mr Morris as the first chief executive of Darlington Primary Care Trust, described him as a "very special person".

"The most important thing to him was helping people - he was a man of great integrity and was very passionate about what he did."

Aside from his work, Mr Morris enjoyed cycling and skiing, as well as squash, tennis and golf.

He has twice cycled from London to Paris, and spent decades skiing in the Austrian Alps, which is widow, Carmel, described as a second home.

"He will be sadly missed by so many people here and in Austria," she added.

Councillor Bill Dixon, leader of Darlington Borough Council, said: “Colin's drive, energy and passion meant that services for the elderly and disabled dramatically improved and the whole service was transformed.

"He was widely respected across the full spectrum of social care. I am proud to have known and worked with him.”

Cllr Heather Scott, leader of the opposition, said: “He was held in high regard when he worked in Darlington and helped us through some difficult times.

"I am extremely sad at the news of his death>"

Ada Burns, council chief executive, said: “Many residents won’t know him by name but many will have benefitted and continue to benefit from his work and influence in Darlington and further afield.

"The town has lost a true pioneer in the field of social care and health."
