A VAN carrying a highly flammable liquid was involved in a crash with a 4x4 vehicle on a busy bypass this afternoon.

A stretch of the A688, near Bishop Auckland, remains closed in both directions following the collision between a Land Rover Freelander and a Nissan Van at about 1.45pm.

There was a septic tank containing a highly flammable liquid inside the van, which prompted police officers to alert County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service.

The North East Ambulance Service was also called to the scene. The nature of any injuries sustained has not been confirmed, although they are not believed to be life-threatening.

Police have closed the road between the St Helen Industrial Estate roundabout and the West Auckland roundabout while the emergency services clear the scene.

Motorists are being advised to find alternative routes.
