PUPILS are being encouraged to read outside of their school- quite literally.

North Park Primary School, in Spennymoor, has created five mini libraries and two reading huts in its grounds so children can select and enjoy books outdoors.

Community manager Emma Spooner said: "We developed our grounds with equipment and resources to promote children's reading, especially outside.

"It is a new, fun way for them to read more, which the school has identified as a main priority."

The school secured £2,500 from Spennymoor AAP towards the project, after winning the support at a public vote on funding held last February.

A further £950 was given from both former Durham County Councillors and school governors Neil Foster and Barbara Graham's member's initiative fund.

And the children worked with Endeavour Housing, livin and Mears to design the boxes and huts that were installed.
