POLICE are urging people to be on their guard following reports of elderly people being coerced into handing over money.
Officers in Bishop Auckland have received complaints about a number of men targeting older residents in the town. It is believed that these men are using fake stories to coerce victims into handing over money.
Detective Sergeant Graham Low, of Durham Police, said: “I encourage everyone to be mindful of any unsolicited requests for money.
“Remember to be vigilant, and if you encounter anything suspicious, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.”
To report suspicious activity, contact police on 999 in an emergency or 101 in a non-emergency.
