A GIANT cake in the form of a Great North Air Ambulance has been donated to the charity’s crews as a thank you for their work.

The three ft cake, created by award winning Birtley baker Magda Pietkiewicz, was given to the charity by Oak Furniture Land, which has opened a new store at the Arnison Centre in Durham.

The Mayor of Durham Bill Kellett, who officially opened the shop on Saturday, said: “The new Oak Furniture Land store is a welcome investment in terms of job creation and is a nice addition to the choice of shops for residents.

“I was delighted to open the showroom and be part of the cake presentation to the GNAAS, they are my chosen charity for 2017 and it’s great that they are being honoured in this way.

Laura Simpson, from GNAAS, said: “The ambulance cake really was a wonderful gesture to support and highlight the work that we do.

“We will be sharing the cake with the crews as a special thank you for the work that they did over the busy Christmas period and all the work they do all year round.”
