PLANS to transform the region's roads and rail networks received cross-party support yesterday.

Sue Jeffrey, leader of Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and former rival of Ben Houchen to become Tees Valley Mayor, said: “We very much welcome this plan and cannot stress the importance of East-West rail links enough.

"We have one of the country’s most successful ports at Teesport and now have a major plan in place through the South Tees Development Corporation to encourage huge new investment at the port and surrounding industrial areas and improved transport links are crucial for its success.

"There is still a long way to go - the Government invests around £1,500 more on transport per head of population in London than on people in the North and given our huge potential we need to argue for more.”

Steve Gillingham, director for the North at Mace, said: "This is an ambitious plan but one that is wholly achievable.

"This project is more important to the North of England than one of our cities winning the Commonwealth Games or Olympics.

“The start of the three-month consultation provides an opportunity for businesses and residents alike to help shape the future of our country’s infrastructure. "

Sarah Glendinning, CBI North-East director, said: “The publication of Transport for the North’s Strategic Transport Plan is a significant milestone in delivering the infrastructure that is needed to boost productivity in the North East and across the whole of the north of England.

“Reaching this stage is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of elected and business leaders, who will be looking to see progress continue.”
