STARGAZERS can enjoy the beautiful dark skies of the North Pennines at a special event this weekend.

Wild North Discovery is hosting stargazing events at Harehope Quarry near Frosterley, Weardale, on Saturday, January 20, and Friday, March 9. The event will start with an introductory indoor session using a software programme that allows people to view the wonders of the night sky in real time.

After this, weather permitting, the group will go outside and use the naked eye, binoculars and a telescope to view some of the wonders of the universe. If the sky is not clear , the experts will pass on the knowledge needed for aspiring stargazers to make sense of the night sky when visibility is better.

The Saturday session runs from 7.30pm to 9pm, while the March 9 event runs from 7pm to 8.30pm. The cost is £5 per person and the event is unsuitable for young children.
