A SERIOUS incident in a Darlington street is being investigated by police.
A spokesman for Darlington Police said officers were called to Powlett Street and a man has been taken to hospital with serious injuries.
A large part of the immediate area has been cordoned off and three police vehicles are at the scene.
A Durham Police spokesman said: "Police are investigating a serious assault which resulted in a man being admitted to Darlington Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.
"The incident took place in Darlington in the early hours of this morning (January 2).
"The victim remains in a serious but stable condition.
"In connection with the ongoing investigation, Powlett Street, Darlington is currently closed."
A neighbour said police have been there since about 7am. Police dogs had earlier been seen in the street.
Another neighbour heard a door getting broken down this morning.
The police spokesman added: "Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact Durham Police on 101, quoting incident number 59 of January 2."
