POLICE are urging thieves who stole items contaminated with the most dangerous type of asbestos to contact them immediately.
The theft took place at the former Car Shock building on the Skippers Lane industrial estate, near Middlesbrough, last night.
The empty premises are undergoing treatment by specialist contractors who are removing brown asbestos, the most dangerous type of the material.
The building is split into three areas - a clean area which has undergone treatment, a self-contained changing area for workers and a dirty area which has yet to have asbestos removed.
Police are concerned that whoever stole three drills, numerous leads, yellow 110v transformers, lights, rigger boots and other workwear will not realise the contaminated goods could pose a serious risk to their health.
PC Lee Derbyshire of Redcar and Cleveland Police, said: "I'd urge anyone who has taken these items to contact police, anonymously if necessary, so we can arrange their urgent collection by people equipped to move these things safely."
If anone should come accross the goods, which are all marked or engraved with a red letter A, they should contact police immediately.
Anyone concerned they may have come into contact with them should seek medical advice.
Anyone with information should contact PC Derbyshire on 01642-302620, or Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
