A WALKER was taken to hospital by ambulance after slipping on an icy path on the Cleveland hills on Saturday.

Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team (CMRT) was called to an area close to Captain Cook's Monument, near Great Ayton, at 10.20am after a woman from Thirsk slipped on an icy path during a charity walk from Roseberry Topping to Osmotherley.

In treacherous conditions, the team managed to reach the woman with a group on foot and with other members in 4x4 vehicles.

The injured walker was given some treatment at the scene by a team doctor, then taken on a stretcher in the team's Landrover ambulance two kilometres down forestry tracks.

She was met by a waiting ambulance at Kildale and taken to hospital.

Fifteen volunteers were involved in the two-hour incident.

A spokesman for CMRT said: "The conditions on the moorland paths are particularly bad and icy at present and should be avoided without very good equipment."
