A FOOTBALL club is expecting to find out the fate of its application for a new alcohol licence tomorrow.

Spennymoor Town Football Club, which is based at Brewery Field, in Spennymoor, applied to Durham County Council for the new premises licence in October.

If successful, the application would allow the club to serve alcohol Monday to Saturday, between 10am and 11.30pm and on Sundays until 11pm.

No alcohol would be permitted outside after 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30pm on Sundays.

The application also includes late night indoor refreshments and live music and entertainment from 10am until midnight Monday to Saturday and 11.30pm on Sundays.

The council has received three letters objecting to the application over public safety, the prevention of crime and disorder, the prevention of a public nuisance and the protection of children from harm and the club amended its application last month.

Objectors fear the new licence would lead to parties and potentially disruptive music events at the club, however the club has reassured residents this is not the purpose of the application.

Rather the intention is to alleviate the need to keep applying for temporary licences on match days. The new premises licence would provide an opportunity to stage events in the future, but these activities would be communuity-based.

Adam Brown, head of PR, media and community engagement at Spennymoor Town, said: “We’ve been having to go through the process of applying for a temporary license for every game, so it makes sense for the club to get a license for a longer time period.  We’ve made this application more general to allow us maximum flexibility and avoid having to reapply for anything.  As always, we’re working alongside residents for the benefit of the Spennymoor community.”

The application will be considered at the next statutory licensing sub-committee meeting, at County Hall, in Durham, tomorrow, at 10am where councillors are due to hear from party representatives.
