A MAN has been injured after falling “from a height” from a city centre building site.

The man was taken to hospital with a back injury after the incident, which happened at the construction site at the former Gates shopping centre, at Milburngate in Durham.

It is believed he fell from a ladder at around 8.30am on Thursday.

The patient was taken to the Major Trauma Unit at James Cook Hospital in Middlesbrough.

The extent of his injuries are not known though they are not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We received a call at 8.30am to reports of an injured man at Milburngate, in Durham.

“We responded with a number of vehicles including our Hazardous Area Response Team and took one patient to hospital with a back injury as a result of a fall from a height.”

The shopping centre off North Road, which was partially demolished this year, is being rebuilt and is due to reopen as The Riverwalk next summer.
