DRIVERS are being urged to avoid a major road near York, due to a large fire at industrial premises near the road.

Six fire engines, an aerial ladder and water bowser are all at the scene of the blaze, believed to be in buildings opposite the Highwayman Café on the A64 near York.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service said crews from York, Huntington, Acomb, Malton, Tadcaster, Malton and Harrogate are all at the scene, along with specialist vehicles.

Police are also urging drivers to avoid the stretch of road near Stockton-on-the-Forest.

The force said firefighters called police to the scene at 4.30pm.

A spokeswoman said: “Please avoid the A64 near Hopgrove roundabout in York.

“Police were contacted by fire services at 4.30pm Wednesday, December 13 regarding large fire at a business premises in the area.

“Police are attending.

“The incident may cause traffic congestion on the A64. Please avoid the area if possible.”

Motorists are advised to expect delays on the A64 and surrounding York roads.
