THREE masked robbers have assaulted an elderly man and ransacked his home.

The three men armed with crowbars, forced their way into the victim’s home, demanded money and assaulted the occupant.

The incident happened in Staindrop Road, West Auckland at about 6pm last night.

The suspects, who were wearing blue boiler suits and masks, left the scene in a dark coloured car.

Detective Constable Clare Lambert, of Durham Police, said: “This was a nasty assault on an elderly gentleman and we would urge anyone who saw anything suspicious to call us immediately.”

The incident follows a separate robbery at a property in High Street, Eldon Lane at around 5.30pm on Sunday where masked men attacked the homeowner before making off with cash, jewellery, cigarettes and Christmas presents.

On that occasion they were armed with a machete.

Detectives are not linking the two incidents.
