A NORTH-East police chief has been named as communicator of the year at an award ceremony celebrating the best public relations campaigns.

Mike Barton, chief constable of Durham Police was given the award for his role in raising the profile of the region.

Mr Barton has been involved in a number of campaigns including implementing new ways of tackling organised criminals, through challenging traditional ways of policing.

He was given the award by the North East Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) at its annual awards ceremony on Friday.

Acting chair Anne-Marie Lacey said: “His leadership of Durham Constabulary captures the spirit and culture of the North East perfectly and resonates well with the heart of PR – it’s about people, publics and relationships.

“He is a regular on the BBC Breakfast newspaper review on Saturday mornings and his force has been featured heavily in national media over the past year.”

Guisborough-based DTW won three awards, including outstanding public relations consultancy, while there was also an award for Durham University’s in-house team.
