A POLICE officer suffered a “horrendous injury” when he was headbutted at a railway station while making an arrest.

PC Nick Storey was knocked unconscious at York railway station while escorting a man off a train, and has been left with a serious eye injury.

The British Transport Police (BTP) said the officer was escorting an abusive man off a northbound Cross Country service. The man was suspected of assaulting a member of staff.

PC Storey is alleged to have then been headbutted in the face and left unconscious on the platform for a short time.

The incident, which happened on November 30, resulted in the officer needing treatment at hospital.

The man was detained and has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act. The investigation continues.

Superintendent Eddie Wylie said: "On a daily basis police officers put themselves in harm's way to deal with incidents to keep the public safe, it's part of the job, being assaulted isn't.

"I have spoken to PC Storey and despite his horrendous injury, he is in good spirits which is a testament to the excellent officer that he is."
