A LORRY carrying a digger has hit a railway bridge and caused major traffic and railway disruption.

The vehicle hit the bridge on Boroughbridge Road in Northallerton this afternoon, disrupting trains and causing congestion on the roads.
#Northallerton - Lines have now reopened. Trains may continue to be delayed by up to 45 minutes or cancelled.

Disruption is expected until 18:00.
The incident forced the closure of Boroughbridge Road as emergency services worked to clear the debris and police have tweeted to urge motorists to avoid the scene if possible.
Trains through Northallerton are expected to be delayed by up to 30 minutes and some services have been revised.
